Our Program: A Comprehensive Approach
Budget Buddies offers a comprehensive program of financial education that tailors assistance to each participant’s needs in a highly practical and sustainable way. Low-income women — who typically have limited, if any, access to the financial advisors available to higher-income households — get personalized help with the specific financial issues that keep them from overcoming poverty. These issues may include heavy debt, problems with the IRS, or poor consumer habits.
The typical Budget Buddies program lasts five to six months and includes:
Readiness Session: An introductory session prepares program participants for formal workshop instruction and individual coaching by helping them learn to speak freely about personal financial issues.
Classroom Instruction: “Buddies” and coaches attend 10-12 workshops together that build basic money-management skills and encourage financial self-confidence.
One-to-One Coaching: Volunteer coaches reinforce classroom instruction and solve individual financial issues through regular, face-to-face meetings with their buddies. In addition to a comprehensive orientation, our coaches receive continuous training through a monthly support group and help from a dedicated coaching coordinator. Together, each buddy and coach create a list of actionable goals that they will work toward during the program.
